Flash 8.5 and ActionScript 3.0 Already?

Macromedia announced a Flash 8.5 player for the first half of 2006. But the alpha version will be available on Oct 17, at the MAX conference.
Looks like 8.5 will just be a player release, not an authoring environment. The release says it will have faster performance and improved debugging. It also says 8.5 will have ActionScript 3.0. Besides better error checking, it doesn’t go into details about what other changes ActionScript 3.0 will bring.

I believe the authoring environment for Flash Player 8.5 will be Flash Builder 2, the Flex 2 plugin for Eclipse.

    I don’t think you’ll be able to code AS3 in Flash 8.

So I guess all those coders who have been complaining about how the IDE in Flash 8 hasn’t really given them any improvements get to buy Flex Builder 2 instead…

Jumping to Flash Player 8.5 is fine with me, as long as it doesn’t delay the release of an updated Flash Xtra for Director :>

Action script 3… I’m glad that the lingo I learned 10 years ago in Director 4 still works in Director 10
