Report from the Game Developers Conference.
I spent all last week at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose. This is my favorite annual event. As usual, I spoke about Shockwave and Flash. I had about 40 people in my full-day “tutorial.” I was surprised by two things: the majority interest in Director and 3D as opposed to Flash, and the interest level in business issues. I really thought that the audience would be mostly people wanting to learn about Flash.
Brian Robbins moderated three round-table discussions on Web-based games. These were well-attended and included various big names from the industry. There was also a Shockwave and Flash developers “group gathering” and two members of the Director team came down from San Francisco to participate.
On the expo floor, there were several Director-related things, including some Shockwave 3D demos at the Intel booth and a Director-developed game called Bad Milk at the Independent Games Festival. This game actually won the grand prize, which should be a boost for Director as a game development tool.

FlashForward 2002 will be in San Francisco on April 2-3. They must have announced it earlier, but the press release went out today. Once again, I won’t be there. After two years of trying, I’ve given up trying to contact someone there about speaking at it. I’m not sure how they decide on speakers, but it must be a who-you-know thing. To find out more, go here.
