Director eBooks?

I’ve been toying with the idea of writing some eBooks. These would be downloadable files, probably PDFs or such. They would deal with specifica topics in Director/Lingo. They wouldn’t be as long as a print book, as they would only deal with a specific topic. But they would include the source code as a .dir.

Is this interesting to any one? What sort of topics would you like to see covered?

I think it’s a good idea. I’ve thought of doing the same type of thing myself, and like you, I’m not sure which topics to cover. Seeing as I know Director pretty well, I’d like to see some tips and tricks type stuff. More advanced than beginner stuff really.

It’s a wonderful idea. A topic dealing with tile engines is needed. One part could deal with the theory behind it. Things like scrolling, collision detection, setting up a camera, autonomous agents that scroll correctly when the main character is moving are areas that also need to be covered.

The second idea is a platform game using sprites. How to handle collision detection and scrolling using sprites instead of a tile engine.

I bought your book advanced lingo for games and I learned alot from your book. What I especially liked was the fact that the code was well documented with comments. These two topics don’t seem to be completely covered anywhere and I think both would generate alot of interest.

I would love to see some eBooks. The areas I would like to see covered would be code using the timeOut object instead of the on exitFrame handler, maybe some application development issues such as creating icons, shortcuts, writing to the registry, setting up an installer (maybe through Director), setting up an updater to communicate with an online site to distribute updates. I would like to see the differences in mx2004 discussed: windows, the displaytemplate, the system tray, flash components and setting/getting properties, and most definitely javascript. Flash components are not too useful to me since they’re much too bulky, but I don’t like not knowing how to communicate with them through lingo.

    definitely 3d lingo!!!

Hi there. Good idea. I would like to read more about multiuser aplications and games, 3d lingo, 3d and multiuser…

How can a person get involved in the creation of the e-Books that you speak of. I enjoy Lingo, I love it actually and at one time I was intending to create a series of example files with excessively commented code, simple working files that do not hand another user code like an in-depth property script that generates a pop up dialog that does all of the work for them, provided they can figure out how to make the dialogue pop open…. HEHE…

Have any of you ever though about picking up a copy of MXDJ at your local news stand… I got one like 6 months ago with a dvd with every previous issue dating back a full year in full color high quality PDF. Deals with flash, flash components, Dreamweaver, cold fusion, fireworks, director….

Some very useful information…. 3D behaviors and such…

Any way I am Interested in this cause and would like to be a contributor in any way I can…

Great Idea!! There is a real shortage of up to date, advanced topic coverage. I learn best seeing how others have done things, so well documented code examples would be terrific! I would love to see examples of business applications. Games are fun but there is a bigger clientele for biz applications. Director is underappreciated and underutilized as an application development tool. A book covering nothing but examples of successful business applications would be great. Whatever you decide to do with your e-books will be fine with me, I’m grateful just to learn from those who know more than I.
