The Web Games category finalists of The 7th Annual Independent Games Festival include three entries, all made with either Shockwave or Flash. They include: Dodge That Anvil, Moleculous, Dad ‘N Me.
Two out of three of the finalists were done in Shockwave. I hope that Adobe realizes Director’s value as a tool for creating games, and maybe invests more into Director development.

We just posted a simple, fun game called Santa’s Christmas Ride at Holiday Arcade. What makes this different than our typical game is that we are making it available for free download. Mac and PC.
From a developer standpoint, this marks a switch-over for me to using ActionScript 2.0. Until now I have stuck with AS 1.0 to keep a Flash 5 compatibility. What was a show is the stand-alone file size. The .swf is only 88K, but that makes a 1.6 meg Mac projector and a 1.2 meg PC projector. Ouch. I think that’s pretty close to a stripped-down Director Projector. And there is a lot of waste too, as compressed .dmg and .zip versions trimmed off about 25% of the file size. I remember making Flash 4 projectors that were about 400K. That made for a nice free download.

The Macromedia home pageno longer sports the Macromedia logo. Instead, teh Adobe logo is there, and the words “formerly macromedia” appear next to it. In addition, the banner animation states “Adobe and Macromedia are now one.” An exciting day!

More visible changes this morning. Macromedia’s Web site looks more or less the same, but the <title> tags show “Adobe - Macromedia…”. The top item at Adobe’s homepage is Adobe completes acquisition of Macromedia. Adobe’s store pages include Studio 8 for sale, plus links to Macromedia’s store. As Casey points out in a comment to my previous post, even Director is mentioned at Adobe’s site now.
Oh, and also, MACR is no longer a valid stock symbol. Goodbye MACR.

Adobe wasted no time announcing new bundles that include both Adobe and Macromedia software. See this article: New Adobe Design, Web and Video Bundles Combine Latest Creative Software From Adobe and Macromedia: Financial News - Yahoo! Finance.
The bundles are:
1. The Adobe Design Bundle that combines Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium with Flash Professional 8 software.
2. The Adobe Web Bundle that brings together Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium and Studio 8.
3. The Adobe Video Bundle that delivers Adobe video solutions coupled with Flash Professional 8.
The Adobe Design Bundle and Web Bundle are available for purchase today and the Adobe Video Bundle is expected to ship in early 2006.
So basically, it looks like the Design Bundle ($1,599) is Adobe’s Suite with Flash 8, and the more expensive ($1899) Web Bundle includes the whole Studio 8, with Fireworks even.
